About Me

flyfisherman sat beside river wharfe

My name is Rob Smith, I am the author of the critically acclaimed book The North Country Fly: Yorkshire’s Soft Hackle Tradition. Over the years I have been fortunate enough to have written various articles on fly fishing and fly tying in a variety of magazines including: Salmon, Trout & Sea Trout, Fly Fishing & Fly Tying, Salmon and Trout. And the Fly Dressers Guild own publication Flydresser.
I have demonstrated flytying at many international fairs and exhibitions, including the British Fly Fair International and the International Flytying Symposium. And I am immensely proud to have dressed many traditional North Country spider patterns all featuring authentic and vintage materials, which now feature in several museum collections both abroad and here in the UK.
A well as the big shows I also undertake several fly-tying demonstrations each year, demonstrating to local clubs and angling associations. In concert with these engagements, I also give a range of presentations and talks on the history of the traditional North Country spider patterns, featuring rare private fly manuscripts and vintage materials from names such as T.E. Pritt, Edmonds & Lee, Francis Walbran and Sylvester Lister but to name a few.
The philosophy around these blog pages is to share with others my passion for fly fishing and flytying, these pages are being put together because I enjoy what I do, and I love the art, the history and the never-ending learning experience that is fly tying and fly fishing.
